Who is eligible for the 5-year visa exemption for Vietnam?

A 5-year Vietnam visa exemption is granted to Vietnamese overseas and foreigners who are husband, wife, children of Vietnamese citizens or overseas Vietnamese.

This visa exemption is a type of long-term visa. They can enter Vietnam at any time within 5 years.

Notes:

  • This certificate of visa exemption is valid for a maximum of 5 years and is shorter than your passport duration or your resident permit 06 months. Therefore, if your passport or green card is valid for less than 5 years old, the certificate of visa exemption will be valid for less than 5 years.
  • If the certificate of visa exemption has not expired, you do not need to apply for a Vietnam visa.
  • If you enter Vietnam with this certificate of visa exemption, you will be allowed to stay 180 days at most for a one-time entry.
  • If you want to stay longer than 180 days, in case of guaranteed and suitable reasons, you will be considered for extension of temporary residence, each time not exceeding 180 days.

How to apply for 5-year Vietnam visa exemption

To get a 5-year Vietnam visa exemption, you need to perform 2 steps:

Step 1: Prepare required documents

The documents needed for applying a 5-year Vietnam visa exemption differ between:

  • Vietnamese overseas who do not have Vietnamese passports;
  • Foreigners who are husband, wife, children of Vietnamese or overseas Vietnamese.

Case: Vietnamese overseas

To get a 5-year Vietnam visa exemption, you need to prepare all documents below:

  1. 01 application form: You will need to declare your information in the online application and print the copy.
  2. Foreign passport: Show (or send) the original passport along with a copy of your passport for document records. Your passport must be valid for at least 12 months, but a valid period of 5 years and 6 months can help you apply for the 5-year Vietnam visa exemption.
  3. 02 digital portrait, size 4cm x 6cm (or 2 inches x 2 inches), white background, straight look, no colored glasses or hats, 01 photo pasted into the declaration, 01 photo pinned or attached with the sheet declaration.
  4. Proof that you are a Vietnamese residing abroad (show or send the original document and 01 copy for document records). It can be one in the below list:
    + Birth certificate;
    + Certificate proving Vietnamese nationality;
    + Decision to return / relinquish Vietnamese nationality;
    + Certificate proving loss Vietnamese nationality;
    + Vietnam Passport that has expired (Vietnam passports which are still valid is not the subject of visa exemption);
    + Identity document (valid and expired);
    + Latest voter card;
    + Family register book;
    + Document issued by a foreign competent agency that shows the person granted the document has Vietnamese nationality or Vietnamese origin.
  5. In the absence of the documents in paragraph (4), the applicant may submit one of the following papers:
    + Letter of guarantee from Vietnamese association overseas.
    + Letter of guarantee from Vietnamese citizens. The Vietnamese who guarantee you need to have Vietnamese nationality and have a valid Vietnamese identity card or passport. Submit their Vietnamese passport or Vietnamese identity card and a copy of the document.

These two types of guarantee documents do not have to be authenticated.

Case: Foreigners who are husband, wife, children of Vietnamese or overseas Vietnamese:

You will have to prepare all documents below to apply 5 years Vietnam visa:

  1. 01 application form: You will need to declare your information in the online application and print the copy.
  2. Foreign passport: Show (or send) the original passport along with a copy of your passport for document records. Your passport must be valid for at least 12 months, but a valid period of 5 years and 6 months can help you apply for the 5-year Vietnam visa exemption.

  4. Show or send the original, submit 01 copy for records one of the documents below. It is used to prove your relationship as spouse, parent, child of a Vietnamese
    + Marriage certificate;
    + Birth certificate;
    + Certificate of parent-child relationship;
    + Other valid papers according to Vietnamese law;
    + Adoption certificate.

Step2: Submit these documents to the visa issuing authority, which is:

  • Vietnamese diplomatic missions in your country ( embassies and consulates- see further information here)
  • The Vietnam Immigration Department of the Ministry of Public Security (if you are in Vietnam).
